- ESU - Essex Court Chambers National Mooting Competition
City University won this year’s ESU - Essex Court Chambers National
Mooting Competition. Elizabeth Prochaska and Benedict Rodgers were the winning team, beating
Katherine Hallett and Jeremy Lightfoot of the University of Oxford into
second place.
The final was held in the Lord Chief Justice’s Court of the Royal Courts of Justice on 22 June, and
was judged by the Hon Mr Justice Lawrence Collins together with Jeffrey Gruder QC and Professor Robert Stevens from Essex Court Chambers.
- OUP National Mooting Competition
The OUP National Mooting Competition final was held at Oxford University Press
on 8 July 2005 and was judged by Richard Ramsey, law lecturer at Oxford Brookes University.
45 universities entered this year’s competition, the eighth annual OUP contest, with the
University of Newcastle upon Tyne coming out on top. Christopher Grout and Clare Ellis represented
Newcastle. King’s College London (Jack Macauley and Marcus Stark) were a close runner-up.
The other finalists were the University of Manchester
(Nasstassia Hylton and Clare Johnson); the University of Central England
(Tom Scoville and Robert Rooney); Sheffield Hallam University
(Jeremy Smith and David Jones); and Southampton University
(Richard Clarke and Carlo Coccaro).

Following a well-contested and fiercely competitive final,
the team from Christ's College Cambridge just edged out a team
from Lincoln University to claim the Annual ICLR Mooting Competition winner’s shield.
This year’s judge for the final was The Honourable Mr Justice Tomlinson
and he remarked that deciding the winner of the final had been an extremely difficult task.
Winning appellants Chris Wood and David Lowe actually lost their case
but their skills of argument and public speaking gave them the edge over runners up
Jessica Mack and Emily Marshall.
The aim of the competition is to encourage all law students to try their advocacy
skills at mooting, not just those students with aspirations to be called to the bar.
The ICLR's competition is now in its fourth year, and is open to undergraduate law students
or CPE students. Justis and The Law Society sponsored the 2004/5 competition.

- Midland Universities Mooting Competition
Sheffield Hallam University beat Nottingham University to win the 2005 Midland
Universities Mooting Competition. The final was held at De Montfort University in Leicester, on
25 April.
- De Montfort internal mooting competition
The final of De Montfort University's internal mooting
competition took place on 18 July and was judged by Professor
Richard Card (an author of Card, Cross and Jones; Criminal Law). The
winners were Michael Nkrumah (2nd Year student) and Chris James (Finalist) who were
jointly awarded the Leciestershire Law Society Cup.
